I love writing; poems, blog posts, blurbs, books etc. But if I didn’t love reading, I wouldn’t be able to write. And it works the other way as well.
A famous quote I found said:
“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”- Stephen King
It sounds a bit blunt and harsh but it’s true. In order to know what to write about, you have to read first.
Sometimes it can be quite mundane to sit and read; I feel the same way about writing at times, especially when I know it’s a lot of writing I have to do. I had to find new ways to motivate me to… write and read.
I realized that I couldn’t be in my bed whilst trying to write or read a book. I would get too comfortable and eventually, fall asleep.
I had to sit at a table; at a desk with my iPad, my diary and my laptop in order to write efficiently without giving up.
I want to, one day, publish my own book and so I decided to research on ways that can help me to write in book style but just generally, provoke me to write. Here’s a few:
WattPad is a website that allows you to submit stories for everyone to read. I’ve tried new ways to read via various different avenues i.e. Kindle, iPad books etc. but none comes close to this app. It’s easy to share your stories and read others as well. It is not just an app to submit your own book or read others but it’s also community focused. You can find users on Wattpad that specialize in creating book covers also. Users can comment on your works and Wattpad also has competitions that you can submit your book for and have it win an award for the year. If you love to read and write, you need to sign up to WattPad.
Anytime I write, I have to have a thesaurus opened as well. I find it quite monotonous if I use the same word over and over again; I always try and find new words to use that can mean the same thing I was trying to say.
Thesaurus allows you to type in a word and it comes up with various other words that can mean the same thing. If you’re not convinced with the answer it gives you, you can always double check in a Dictionary. To have these two apps open at the same time as you’re trying to write; it’s a massive necessity.
Have you ever wanted to write on the go and didn’t know how to go about it?
Evernote helps you do just that! I researched on new applications that can help me write all the time and Evernote seemed to work just perfectly for me. It’s not a fancy application like WordPress or Microsoft where you can upload pictures or anything like that; it’s just an app that helps you posts… notes. So if ever something comes to mind and you need to write it down, Evernote is a great place to store these. Distraction free, it’s an easy-to-use application that I believe every blogger/writer should have.
If you are a type of person that needs to brainstorm your ideas before you can write them, then these two applications can come in handy for you. I normally just brainstorm on paper, but for some who don’t like hand-writing; an app is best.
Mindnode is a specific app available on IOS. Whereas, Freemind is a desktop application. They both look roughly the same and do accomplish the same sort of thing. Even though I have not used Mindnode, it has been recommended by many. I know about Freemind because it’s what I had to use for a university module.
Pinterest comes in handy for everything. If you are looking for new things to cook, new ways to do your hair or even home designs; Pinterest has all of that.
I specifically like that Pinterest also has lots of tips and advice for bloggers/writers. If you haven’t already signed up to it, now would be a good time to do that.
Tips for: Hair, Beauty, Home, Fitness, Health, Exercise, Blogging & Writing and many others. I only found out about this app a few months ago and ever since; it’s been a huge help.
When I was writing for an online magazine, this is the website they recommended to me. I was finding it difficult to write because I didn’t know what to write about. I was running out of ideas. StumbleUpon is all about news stories. Anything someone else is talking about you can know about with StumbleUpon. It’s not only a website, it’s also a free app that you can download on any IOS device i.e. iPad, iPhone etc. or Android device.
It’s a discovery tool ranging from different interests such as: fashion, health, well-being, relationships and many more. It’s like reading a newspaper but online and it’s much more colorful!
I just discovered this app but I like how it looks so far.
If you see an article but cannot read it at that opportune time, you can save it to read later. That’s what Pocket is all about and for me, that’s exactly what I need. Not only does it allow you to save straight to Pocket from your email, Facebook, Twitter and Google Chrome or Safari but you can also create a blog post that has a user interface that can be synced directly to WordPress. That’s something I need. What about you?
There are a lot of applications in today’s society, but which ever one suits you best is all that matters. I hope this has helped you.
If there are any other apps that you think I could benefit from, please comment below; I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on the subject.
